If you grew up in the early 1970’s, raise your hand if you remember Elmer the Safety Elephant. Elmer was born in 1947, when Toronto Ontario parents and educators decided something had to be done to combat the number of traffic accidents involving children. I remember Elmer the Safety Elephant at the school I attended in Toronto - it was crazy popular and as kids we all loved it. In 1969, it was brought to Langford.

At that time, Elmer the Safety Elephant became synonymous with safety programs for children in grades one to five and was administered by the Canada Safety Council. In Langford's case, the fire department sponsored bringing Elmer’s safety program to Langford Elementary School in December 1969, with its flag, rules, and song….
