When Canada went to war in 1914, there were many young men in the area that gladly and immediately enlisted. Fueled by patriotic duty or a longing for adventure they yearned to charge into Europe and its battlefield. The grim reality and horrors that awaited them in the trenches was hardly on their minds. Helping to resist German aggression, they saw themselves as protectors of their homeland. It was quite simply, their duty.
Many think it was only the young that reached the war front. But that was not the case. Despite age, there were older gentlemen that desired to do their part, pick up arms, and enter into Europe’s Theatre of War. Harry Edwards was one of them. But his journey wasn't exactly an easy one.
